Women 2 Drive in Saudi Arabia Day

It’s June 17th and women in Saudi Arabia may be detained for “driving while women”. They have organized and are defying the fatwa preventing them from driving.

Currently women must depend on a male relative to take them around or hire a driver. But not all can afford drivers or have men in their households to take them shopping

or pick them up from work.

There isn’t a secular or religious law preventing women from driving, but the ruling (fatwa) made in 1991 was based on a decision by the interior ministry.

In May, 33-year-old Manal-al Sharif was detained for driving and for also influencing the moral fabric because she posted a videotape of herself driving on YouTube.  Her defiant act propelled women to organize and protest today June 17.

Women are showing their support from all over the world via the FB page Women2Drive.
