Wanda Sykes:Breast Reduction Leads to Double Mastectomy

Comedian Wanda Sykes revealed to Ellen DeGeneres (airing Monday) that she had a double mastectomy in February. She had gone in for a breast reduction and they found the early stages of cancer- stage 0.

Although they were going to monitor her regularly she opted for a double mastectomy. “… I’m not good at keeping on top of stuff. I’m sure I’m over due for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already. I have a lot of breast cancer history on my Mother’s side of the family, which I didn’t know about…”

Sykes, was uncertain about going public with her health. “I was like, I don’t know, should I talk about it or what? How many things could I have? I’m black, then Lesbian. I can’t be the poster child for everything.”

We don’t mind you being a poster child for everything…a little humour sometimes makes the message more palatable.
