Crying is not an option when you work with cut-throat Cutrone!

By Alicia Baird

Women aspiring to break into the fashion industry can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Kelly Cutrone has offered some of her personal experiences and professional expertise in her new book, If You Have to Cry, Go Outside.

The fashion public relations powerhouse is the founder of PR firm, People’s Revolution. Working in the industry for over a decade, Cutrone has become a master of her trade. With appearances on reality shows The Hills, The City and later her own, Kell On Earth, it is clear she enjoys mentoring and supporting her employees. Her blunt, yet constructive criticisms and cut-throat way of thinking has made her a force to be reckoned with and a “mama bear” in disguise. Throughout the years, her work and dedication has garnered her a huge fan base of hungry cubs, making it no surprise the fashion publicist has become a New York Times bestseller.

If You Have to Cry, Go Outside is a quick read about survival, strength and success. Cutrone takes you through her accidental break into the fashion industry, her slum days of drugs and debauchery, and her journey finding clarity, spirituality and everything in between. Beginning each chapter with inspirational quotes, a sea of guidance and words of wisdom follow. She offers twelve steps to finding your own religion, reasons why everything good happens after your twenties, an empowered girls guide to dressing for work, top ten career “don’ts” and more.

Cutrone is a single mother, raising her young daughter, Ava, in one of four floors in an apartment building in SoHo (the other three house People’s Revolution). In the book, she writes of balancing work and motherhood. As an unconventional woman, creating her own rules, Cutrone describes how the traditional role of females have been portrayed and taught for centuries. She speaks of working relationships with former clients and the importance of standing behind hard decisions.

In one of her final chapters, Cutrone instructs aspiring fashion interns on how to secure an internship, impress the boss and hopefully book a job in the end. She also explains how she runs People’s Revolution and gives insider details on the office dynamic. As a bonus, she also answers questions submitted to her through her Facebook page from fans and friends such as, “How do I get an internship at People’s Revolution?”, “Do you comb your hair?” and “Why does everyone in your office have to wear all black?”

If You Have to Cry, Go Outside is a must read for anyone wanting to embark on a career in the fashion industry and pursuing their dreams.
